A university professor went to visit a famous Zen master. While the master quietly served tea, the professor talked about Zen. The master poured the visitor's cup to the brim, and then kept pouring. The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself.
"It's overfull! No more will go in!" the professor blurted. "You are like this cup," the master replied, "How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup." (Author Unknown)
I think a lot of us are needlessly "overfull" these days.

In order to "empty his cup," a man I once met on a plane, would literally stop processing new information for a day, every few months. He would cut himself off from the world...no TV, no communication, no food. After a day of fasting from the world, his mind was clear of the unnecessary garbage we all accumulate from day to day-- his cup was literally “empty.” He felt the practice helped him process information better once he remerged from his hiatus. I enjoy food to much to inflict this sort of cruelty on myself. But he swore by it…...
